The Midway RCMP are advising that a suspect was successfully apprehended into custody on Tuesday night after the sections of the village were cordoned off and contained as police searched for the suspect.

Cpl. Ted Bowen of Midday RCMP said that the search for a suspected began around 5 p.m. Tuesday. The suspect was traveling from Grand Forks after an alleged attempted theft of a vehicle from the Interfor parking lot, and police were alerted that the suspect was “traveling in a dangerous manner,” Bowen said.

Bowen said the vehicle was abandoned at the Midway arena and the suspect fled on foot, so RCMP began the process of containment and a police dog search with dogs from the Trail/Nelson area.

RCMP were originally unable to locate the suspect, so began canvassing the Midway area to advise residents of the situation, Bowen said.

Shortly, a call of complaint regarding a suspicious male was received and RCMP responded. The suspect once again fled on foot, and was subsequently apprehended from a shed around 11 p.m., Bowen added.

RCMP are recommending charges of theft of a motor vehicle as well as obstruction of a peace officer. No charges have yet been laid and the investigation is ongoing, but the suspect was in custody as of Wednesday morning.
