Finally – first place! Midway resident Willy Kakuno (left) was a happy man at the 35th annual Nisei Fishing Derby this year. He is seen here with derby organizer Randy Uyeyama.

Results are in for the annual Vancouver Nisei Curling Club Fishing Derby held on June 1 at Jewel Lake:

Adult class:

Willy Kakuno 1st place – 2 lbs. 11 oz.

Boyd Higashi 2nd place 2 lbs. 10 oz.

Vicki Kakuno 3rd place 1 lb. 1 oz.

The largest  fish taken in the children 15 and under class was caught by Trevor Tahara 13.2 ounces.

The event is as much reunion as  shing derby for many - with people coming from as far away as Fort St. James for the weekend.
