FROM THE BACK PEW – It’s a ‘bunch of bunk’ without love

Pastor Ed Brouwer dispenses wit and wisdom in his regular column to the Boundary Creek Times.

We at Sidley Mountain Church realize that fewer and fewer people are actually coming to church without a connection with that church, and that connection needs to be someone that they trust. Sitting behind someone for an hour or two during a meeting is not conducive to the building of relationships. So how do we change that? The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again in the same manner expecting a different result. We must be willing to embrace the need for change, Godly change!

First understand, Christ did not die so we could attend meetings, so let’s lift the guilt trip for not attending church meetings. However, Christ did give His life so we could have a real and lasting relationship with God the Father and His children (that is you and me). And if you have “real” relationship with the Father and His children you will want to get together and celebrate the faithfulness of God. Not because of some religious obligation, but rather because you know it pleases the Father when His children get along and gather to praise Him.

I mean honestly we are not fooling anyone. You can sing in the choir, serve on the board, you can even dance and shout amen! Without love—love for God and for your neighbour—it is just a bunch of bunk. Todd Agnew a Christian recording artist says it well in his song, “We are all family.”

If we’re all under one Father, that makes us all brothers.

We are all family

Who’s my brother in a different kind of church?

Who’s my sister struggling with her worth?

Who’s my mother, gave me all but birth?

Who’s my neighbor? Who’s my loved one?

Who’s my friend? We are all family

You don’t have to look like me, for us to be brotherly

You don’t have to be like me, for us to be family

You don’t have to think like me, for us to speak intimately

You don’t have to agree with me, for us to be family

You don’t have to live near me, for us to be neighborly

You don’t have to dress like me, for us to be family

You don’t have to speak like me, for us to love each other you see

You don’t have to be like me, for us to be family

But you do have to love me! John 13:35

By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.
