Deadwood Junction hosted the Kettle River Festival of the Arts last Saturday night with three of the Boundary’s most entertaining groups providing an evening of music, dance and fire spinning. From Rock Creek, the Cullpeppers (Ellen Tolson, Terry Keough and Shannon Kelly-Keough) opened the evening with their distinctive harmony of instrument and voice. They were followed by two acts from Grand Forks: the Hip Sisters, a fusion belly dance troupe, and then the fire spinners known as Luminosity. The Hip Sisters have been dancing in Grand Forks for almost 13 years and seven members of the troupe came to perform in Greenwood. “We absolutely love dancing,” said Cynthia Howard. “We love what it does for us as a group of people. We love the closeness that it creates to do this together for the 13 years. We’ve created a total family that has its ups and downs and all that stuff but it is a tight group. “Genuine love and respect is evident in the smiles we exchange, while sharing our joy of dance with our audience and with each other,” said the Kettle River Festival of the Arts website of the group. Luminosity is another great Grand Forks group that, in fact, includes many members of the Hip Sisters. Dancing again – but dancing with fire. When asked how they got started spinning fire they said a couple of them took a workshop. Luminosity has now been playing with fire for over a decade. “We dance through life together,” said Alisun Webster who is a member of both groups.
