The Community Education and Workplace Training calendar has arrived in mailboxes in the West Kootenay-Boundary. There are more than 600 courses

An array of opportunity is arriving at mailboxes across the region this month. Selkirk College’s Winter/Spring Calendar is out and brings more than 600 offerings to enhance your continuing education and skills training.

The Community Education and Workplace Training calendar is bigger than ever with 100 pages of courses for life-long learners in West Kootenay-Boundary communities.

“The range of programs being offered over the next few months is vast,” says Gregg Neelin, Community Education and Workplace Training manager for Selkirk College. “An important part of Selkirk’s driving mission is to transform lives through education and training. This is our opportunity to provide lifelong learning for the people of our region.”

The calendar offers community education, Employment Skills Access, workplace training and contract training. The beautifully designed booklet is a one-stop shop for those looking to further their skills and knowledge.

Examples of community education include courses in drawing, bookkeeping for small business, geocaching for families, understanding Facebook, the best gardening practices and proper nutrition.

“There is really something for everyone and something for people of all ages,” says Neelin. “And we are very fortunate to have so many talented instructors in our own communities to teach these courses.”

For those looking to start a new career, the calendar is a showcase of pathways. If you are unemployed you can take advantage of the Employment Skills Access program which provides tuition-free training for those needing to upgrade their skills to get employed.

There are opportunities to take individual courses to bolster your resume or complete a certificate program in a number of different fields. Selkirk also offers contract training where the college will work with companies and organizations to design and deliver training that’s sure to provide an advantage.

Courses, seminars and workshops are offered throughout the region in Castlegar, Nelson, Trail, Nakusp, Grand Forks, Kaslo and in communities on the East Shore (Riondel, Crawford Bay, Gray Creek and Boswell). The courses run from January until summer.

“We hope people take time to leaf through the calendar once it arrives to their mailbox,” says Neelin. “This is a chance for people to take advantage of all the great educational and skills training options available at Selkirk College.”
