➤ Granby Buys Its First Phoenix Mine – “Stephen H.C. Miner, president of the Granby Rubber Company of Granby, Quebec, announced the purchase of 700,000 shares in the Knob Hill Mining Company, which owns the Knob Hill mine in Greenwood Camp (ed. - soon to be renamed Phoenix). The company has decided to extensively develop the property this spring, along with the adjoining Old Ironsides mine in which it has a heavy interest.”
➤ Rossland Railway King Sells Out To CPR – “Mr. F. Augustus Heinze, the Rossland railway king, has sold out his railway and smelter in Trail to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. The purchase of the Heinze railroad will give the C.P.R. direct entrance into Rossland, without constructing a railway to Robson. It will also remove Heinze’s opposition to its coming into the Boundary Creek district.”
➤ “Life Is Short” Advertisement – Rendell & Co. have an interesting ‘hook’ to their latest store advertisement. “Life is Short!! And but a very small percentage of mankind live out their allotted span. Over some of the things that cut life short we have some control; one of the most deadly of these is impure Baking Powder. You can avoid this by using ‘Schilling’s Best’ Baking Powder. We carry it and have enough on hand to RAISE THE TOWN.”
➤ Corporal Punishment in Midway – “Last week, the school directors held an investigation at the school house as to corporal punishment inflicted by the teacher, Miss McKenzie, on the scholars, and especially on one, whose parents do not seem to believe in the old adage, ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’. But after a thorough examination of facts, the trustees exonerated the teacher and advised her to use the rod with discretion whenever necessary.”
➤ Gold From Silver – “The Spokane Spokesman-Review reports that a small scrap of yellow metal was submitted to Mr. Fasset for assay and his test showed that it was 70 per cent pure gold; 20.4 per cent silver; and 9.6 per cent baser metal. This bit of metal came from the laboratory of Professor Stephen H. Emmons, the chemist who has startled the world with the announcement that he has discovered the secret that has been sought by the alchemists and sages of all ages, the transmutation of silver to gold. If Professor Emmons is to be believed, this sample of his product, which he calls argentaurum, was made from a Mexican silver dollar.”
➤ Navigation Of The Okanagan – “The United States government is about to make navigable the Okanagan River from where it flows into the Columbia River to Osoyoos Lake, a distance of 80 miles… the entire length of the river in British Columbia can also be made passable for steamers of light draft, provided the Dominion government will make navigable those portions of the river that connect Okanagan, Vaseux and Dog (ed. – now Skaha) lakes.”
