The last year has been a good one for Lisa Nicole – travelling extensively to Toronto and Nashville, as well as getting to perform on stage with Keith Urban. Next up for the singer will be an appearance at Greenwood Founders Day this Saturday.

Nicole attended music school at Selkirk College, before moving to Vancouver to pursue her career. Her first CD was released in 2012, followed by her second and most recent in 2016, Come Find Me.

After travelling so extensively in the past year, Nicole said she’s excited to play for a local audience.

“I was in the city for five years, I just came home,” she said. “I love it here and I had forgotten how much I missed it. I’m always on the road.”

Nicole won the B.C. Country Music Awards Artist (BCCMA) Development Project in 2016, which sent her to Toronto for three months as well as to Nashville for a songwriting trip.

While there, Nicole sang with a long-time influence, Keith Urban.

“I was in Nashville in April for a songwriting trip and I knew Keith Urban was doing a pop-up show,” she said. “I went down there and went to the front and told him I wanted to sing with him, handed him the CD and we sang together.”

She was also nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year and Country Club acts at the BCCMAs in 2015.

Nicole said that fans of pop and rock music often like her work – in fact, she frequently gets comments from people who profess not to like country music.

“A lot of people will say to me, ‘I don’t usually like country music but I like your stuff.’ I get that a lot, maybe it’s my voice. People who like pop and rock generally seem to like my [music],” she said, noting that she counts Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton and Janis Joplin as a few of her varied influences.

Nicole said performing in Greenwood, especially on such a big occasion, is “an honour.”

“I remember playing in the park there when I was little, my mom used to take me,” she said. “I’ll be performing new songs off my CD, some of my favourite songs off my old CD, and a few of my favourite covers that I love to do and everyone knows, to get everyone singing. I’m really excited.”
