How many more must die?

A local resident urges pressure on the government to end the use of chemical pesticides.

Are our tax dollars going to pesticide companies to spray our roads and trails so we can get poisoned, cancer, and other serious health problems? How many more children must die before somebody stops the use of these deadly chemicals?

The CCPA Monitor, in July/August 2001, states three million people in the world each year are poisoned by these deadly chemicals. They also state “Pesticides include weed killers (also known as herbicides).”

In February 1980, National Geographic published 40 pages of study on “The Pesticide Dilemma”. Chemical spraying has been going on since 1945. They have been spraying our roads and trails since 2001.

The West Coast Environmental Law stated in July 2001 “Pesticides are toxic or biocidal substances that are intended to kill or seriously harm living things.” “They are found in the air, soil, water, precipitation, birds, fish, wildlife, domestic animals and human beings, including newborns.”

National Geographic states, “Yet another complication: pesticides in drinking water.

Last year in California, state health officials discovered surprising levels of the soil fumigant DBCP in some wells of water systems serving 420,000 people. DBCP had percolated down to groundwater.

“Dr. Keith T. Maddy, staff toxicologist of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, is concerned about DBCP’s carcinogenicity, or power to cause cancer. DPA considers lifetime use of water carrying as little as one part per billion of DBCP (equivalent to one drop in 12,000 gallons) to be unsafe.”

When will our groundwater be poisoned? I urge everyone to write or email the minister of environment and other government offices in Victoria or phone 1-877-952-7277 in Nelson and Andreas Wins- Purdy at 1-250-490-8257 in Penticton. Also talk to your local governments. Tell them you do not want your tax dollars to go to poisoning our neighbourhoods. There are safe alternatives to pesticides.

If you sow pesticides you reap poison.
