APRIL 11 LETTER: Maybe Cyprus isn't so bad after all

When news broke that the government of Cyprus was seizing 10 per cent of the peoples’ savings, the people objected.

When news broke that the government of Cyprus was seizing 10 per cent of the peoples’ savings, the people objected and stated that no other government would think of doing such a thing.

I wonder if they ever heard of Canada where the government and their tax mob seizes larger portions of a worker’s income before we even receive it and if we have anything left and put in the bank, they not only seize 10 per cent, but steal the whole amount and want anything else you might have stashed away, as they have done to me on various occasions.

I am a senior, nearly 80 years old. I was born in Canada, lived here all my life and have worked in the logging and lumber industry for nearly 50 years.

I never did approve of being penalized for working by this extortion called tax. When the kids were younger, I put money in their name in a trust account and as the savings grew this mob of tax thieves garnisheed my wages for over $1,500 for not declaring this as income.

After I retired, and having nearly $20,000 taken off my income, they sent me a bill wanting more money. When I refused, they seized my bank account.

They have continued to seize my bank account as well as my pension cheque and had ordered the bank not to cash my cheques anymore. The tax mob has stolen most of my life savings.

I now send in a tax form clearly stating my opinion of what I think of this lowdown mob of thieves. That is the only satisfaction I get from working and being robbed for my efforts.

After government and their tax mob have all your money, they put a ransom on our homes and if you can’t afford to pay up they seize your home and put you out on the street. I am sure there are others in similar situations.

Maybe Cyprus is not so bad after all! Welcome to Canada, land of the FREE.
