Well known and respected pioneer of Boundary Country passes.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Harpur, aged 85, on September 25, 2013, in Grand Forks Hospital. Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret in 1999. Survived by devoted wife Carol, children Rick (Judy), Nancy (Mike), Wendy (Pete), Kelly (Karen) and stepsons Mike and Todd Rudolph and families. Also survived by sister Betty Mitchell, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

From grade one to eight he went to the Myncaster School, which was 2 ½ miles west of the ranch. Grades nine to twelve he boarded in Oliver and graduated from the Oliver High school in June 1946. It was during these years that he became an Army Cadet, Boy Scout and a Militia Ranger.

In the fall of 1947, Bill enrolled in a 2 year vocational course at the University of Saskatoon, taking agriculture and animal husbandry. The knowledge learned during that time was invaluable throughout his life and he was always on call to neighbours and friends in need of a helping hand.

Bill was a pillar of the community, involved in many associations and committees. Dearest to his heart was the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair, of which he was a lifetime member. With his resonant voice and his public speaking ability, Bill was called upon to announce at many functions and horse shows. One of Bill’s most recent achievements was receiving the Governor General of Canada Award for community service in February, 2013.

Many special thanks and praise to all the Doctors, nurses, specialists and palliative team in the Interior Health Region who have cared for Bill over the last five years.

At Bill’s request there will be no funeral service. Those wishing to make a donation in his name, can do so to the BC Cancer Foundation, the Palliative Care Unit at the Grand Forks Hospital or a charity of their choice.
