Editor's note: Information from Telus spokesperson Shawn Hall added.

Telus will invest $270,000 in Grand Forks to expand wired broadband infrastructure for residents and businesses.

Telus spokesman Shawn Hall described what the $270,000 would go towards.

"More fibre optic cable in the ground, faster Internet speeds, more capacity and covering more neighbourhoods with broadband. So it really is a continuation of the investment we've been making over a number of years," Hall told the Gazette. "It will go to other things as well. If we bring cable out to a neighbourhood, we need to install other infrastructure, bring it out to homes, those kinds of things and also building to new developments, existing developments and everything else."

Hall said in some cases telephone poles would have to be installed.

"Telus' $270,000 investment means people and businesses right here in Grand Forks will have more access to your Internet services," explained Telus' Southern Interior general manager, Steve Jenkins, in a release. "The demands for advanced communications services is exploding in Grand Forks and Telus is committed to bringing the latest technology to the community."

Telus said the $270,000 investment represents part of Telus' $3 billion, three-year commitment to invest in British Columbia – it says by the end of 2013, it will have invested $1 million in new technology and infrastructure in Grand Forks (since 2009).
