The local leg of the Trans Canada Trail in Grand Forks is being honoured with an inaugural poker run for cyclists and hikers.

The event, running in conjunction with BC Trails Day, is happening June 1 at 10 a.m., starting at City Park. This event is also running collaboratively under the new Grand Forks Community Trails Society trails manager Don Backmeyer. This event is being organized in conjunction with the society, the Kettle River Cycling Association and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary.

This is a fun event meant to celebrate outdoor recreation for walkers, cyclists, hikers and families, a news release stated.

There will be two routes for people to pick, a longer one around the city for those on bicycles and a shorter one around Riverside Trail for walkers and hikers. The only restriction is no throttle bikes.

There will be a free BBQ and prizes at the end of the event.”

This is a celebration of the local trails, as well as the creation of the new Trails Manager position, stated John Grandy, president of the Grand Forks Community Trails Society.

We have miles and miles of trails in and around Grand Forks,” he said. “Some easy, some very difficult. With the new position of trails manager established, we are aiming at becoming the trail destination of Southern B.C.”
