The Village of Midway has applied for around $1.7 million in grant funding toward the renovation of the village’s community centre, according to Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Penny Feist.

The centre at 692 Seventh Ave. was built in 1967 and has capacity for 200 people under normal circumstances. The steps to the building’s “cathedral style” entrance present a barrier to those with difficulty walking.

The building’s stairs and steps provide zero wheelchair access, Feist said.

“That poses a huge challenge to seniors and people with disabilities who have problems with mobility,” Feist explained, adding that, “everything needs an upgrade.”

The centre doesn’t have air conditioning and has no ground floor bathrooms. Its only washrooms are in the basement and are accessible only by steps.

The renovation project envisions an expanded modern facility with a commercial kitchen, the CAO explained.

The village has applied for four grants through a combination of federal and provincial funders. If approved, Feist said the grants would cover most of the projected construction and material costs.

Feist qualified that the proposed renovation is still in the drawing stages, adding that the village is looking for a new architect to carry the project forward.
