The Kettle River Lions Club came to the weekly fire practice in Midway last week with a $2,000 cheque to help with the cost of the water tender that was purchased from Grand Forks last year.

Attending on behalf of the Lions were President Stephen Kirkham, Treasurer Les Jackman, and Secretary Lois Eden along with her husband Tom, who is also a Lions member. “We hope that your efforts at getting fire protection towards Rock Creek is going to all happen,” said Jackman.

“On behalf of the members as well as the Village of Midway, because this is critical for them too, thank you for the way you’ve stepped up,” said Midway Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Walter Osellame. “Not just for the $2,000—that’s huge—but if we didn’t have the Lions club being our sponsors for a couple of government grant applications that we made, then we wouldn’t be able to access that money.

“I’d like to extend our thanks and appreciation to you folks for what you’ve done for not just the fire department, not just the village but the whole surrounding area,” Osellame added.

The fire chief explained the two grants are helping purchase the equipment and apparatus needed to be able to extend the department’s fire response out to the rural areas.
