Awards Day for Term 2 at elementary schools in Beaverdell, Rock Creek, Midway and Greenwood happened last week, just in time for spring break.
These awards ceremonies are a bit more than your typical grab and grin handshake with a certificate; these assemblies are filled with noise, fun and celebration of achievement.
Students can achieve by being on the Honour or Merit Roll, by being a Wild Learner, having a Wild Attitude, being a Wild Home Reader, being a Wild Extra-Curricular, being a Wild Leader or by making Wild Improvements.
If a student passes muster and is named on one of those lists, their name is entered in a draw to compete in a skill-testing or otherwise fun competition. Winning that gives them their choice of one of three boxes.
It makes for a great celebration of achievement—with the emphasis on the fun rather than the prizes.
Parents are given an opportunity to volunteer to compete in a Wild Parent challenge too.
At the West Boundary assembly, Beaverdell dad Vern Moline was singled out for well-deserved thanks by Principal Brian Foy for going above and beyond and keeping the community’s ice rink flooded and maintained for the students to enjoy.
Students excelling in academics were put on one of two lists. The Honour Roll is for intermediate students with a cumulative 3.5 – 4.0 grade point average. Merit Roll is for intermediate students with a cumulative 3.0 – 3.5 grade point average.
