2013 Year in Review - September

A recap of some of the memorable moments of the past year in the West Boundary.

A windstorm crashed through the southern interior last Thursday afternoon causing extensive damage. The Greenwood Cemetery was badly damaged with some grave markers displaced when pine trees along the south fence line were blown over, taking the fence with it.

The Village of Midway imposed water restrictions effective 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3 because their Number 1 pump is out of commission. The use of water for purposes of irrigating lawns and gardens is prohibited.

Greenwood Demolition Derby organizers announced there will not be a derby this year.

Greenwood administrator Robin Dalziel told council that several property owners have been contacted in regards to unsightly premises and many have improved their appearance. “I have been contacted by Estrella Dombrosky who has indicated her formal appeal of the City’s intentions in regards to the property at 256 N. Kimberly Avenue. Correspondence with them will be continuing to see what can be done to reach an appropriate resolution.”

Boundary Community Church in Midway has a new pastor. On Aug. 25, 2013 Ryan van Kuik was installed as their pastor.

The first annual Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival took place at the Rock Creek fairgrounds. Music for the weekend ranged from reggae, folk, rock and roll, to electronic DJs. Organizers Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi aspire to make Ponderosa an annual event that brings those who love music and fresh air back to the Kettle Valley each year.

There’s no ice in the arena yet but you wouldn’t have known it from all the excitement at the Boundary Expo Recreation Complex in Midway last Friday as an enthusiastic crowd came out for the grand opening of the new dressing rooms.

Decommissioning of the Providence Dam at Marshall Lake began on Thursday, Sept. 9 and is expected to end on the 15th.

Volunteer Appreciation Day has been formally celebrated each September at Frank Carpenter Memorial Park in Midway since 2007. This year an entire family was recognized for their service to the community and surrounding area. Mark and Chris Danyluk and their four children—Joya, Lena, Anna and Josiah—moved to Midway in 2002 from Richmond when Mark took the position as pastor at Boundary Community Church. In the years since, the family has been at the forefront of many initiatives to help the sick, the needy, the elderly and the youth of the West Boundary.

The 2013 Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair was a hot one, with temperatures in the 30s on Saturday and nearly as hot again on Sunday. The Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, opened the fair this year.

The dais presented some great musical acts this year— Tim Hus and Fred Penner were headliners—along with the Cullpeppers, the Prenell Reichert Band, Rick Valiant singing the Songs of Sinatra, Laela Heidt, the Timely Wonders, the Sock Monkey Band and a Gordon Lightfoot showcase. As always the local 4-H clubs had a significant part in the program.

The initial steps toward developing economic development for the City of Greenwood took place at a meeting last week when seven members of the Greenwood Board of Trade and Mayor Nipper Kettle sat down to brainstorm economic development ideas.

On Thursday, Sept. 12 Midway RCMP were called to a break and enter at the Gold Pan Cafe in Rock Creek. Cpl. Christensen reported that unknown suspect(s) broke into the business sometime in the early morning hours.

The Boundary Dog Sled Association has announced that the race has changed from being a mid-distance marathon-qualifying race to a two-day sprint race event. To coincide with the change in race format they have also changed the name of the race (though not the association). The new race name is the Boundary Dog Sled Classics. The BDSA is now gearing up for the inaugural sprint races at Jewel Lake on January 25-26, 2014.

Elementary and high school students in the Boundary, and throughout B.C., will not have to miss any class time as the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has reached a tentative Provincial Framework Agreement with the B.C. Public Schools Employer’s Association (BCPSEA).
