A fire-damaged house on North Kimberley must be demolished, says Greenwood city council. Staff was directed to write a letter to the owners of the property giving them 14 days to dispute the notice or 30 days to demolish the building. If, after 30 days no action has been taken by the owner, the city will be in a position to remove the building and have expenses added to the property taxes for the lot.

Three local boys got the thrill of a lifetime recently when Wayne Gretzky showed up to skate with all the participants at the Compete Hockey camp in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho run by world-renowned power skating coach Boris Dorozhenko. Bailey Shaw, Darren Petersen and Chase McKay were at the school last month when Gretzky, who spends his summers in Coeur d’Alene, showed up in uniform and skates to pick up his son who was participating in the camp.

The Rock Creek Community Medical Society is pleased to announce the launch of their new web site, www.rockcreekmedical.ca.

Midway’s Darrin Metcalfe had a good night at the Eagle Track Raceway in Republic on Saturday, July 20 when he won the Les Weaver Memorial Race. Later that evening he won the 25-lap main event in his class to take home the trophy.

Grand Forks and the surrounding area will soon have a new company to enforce an animal control bylaw. The Commissionaires (a private company) have been hired by the RDKB to provide animal control bylaw enforcement for Areas C (Christina Lake), Grand Forks (city), Area D (rural Grand Forks) and Greenwood.

The Riverside Art Gallery was officially opened on Saturday, Aug. 3 during the 2013 Rock Creek Art Walk.

Discover Rock Creek (DRC) hosted Riverfest on Saturday at the market grounds next to Rags, Relics and Rutabagas.

Oliver Glaser organized the Boundary Bash Social 10s Rugby Tournament in Greenwood and invited his former Vancouver club, the East Vancouver Scribes, and a few other teams up for some rugby and socializing in the West Kootenays.

Harpdog Brown and The Bloodhounds drove nine hours between gigs at the Calgary Blues Fest on Saturday night and the 16th annual Sky High Blues Fest in Rock Creek on Sunday evening.

Organizers of the 2013 JLB Memorial Kettle River Run have issued a new tally of donations this year and the revised total puts them over their goal of raising $12,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation of the Southern Interior.

In the four years the run has been going approximately $40,000 has been raised.

The 25th annual Association for Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) Boogie Bash was held at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds. Riders came from all corners of the province to party and raise funds for the AIM Interior Chapter.

Midway celebrated their 120th anniversary (1893 - 2013) with an old-fashioned picnic at James McMynn Park last Saturday. Midway Community Club organized the event with support from volunteers who stepped up to help throughout the day. The Boundary Guiding Unit provided the expertise needed to keep the hot dogs, lemonade, watermelon and cake flowing.

Village administrator Penny Feist reported that some 275 letters were sent out on July 31 to eligible property owners giving them 14 days to declare their intent regarding the proposed Midway Fire Protection Expansion into RDKB Area E. If enough property owners sign up to support the contract service then it will proceed.

At their August 19, 2013 meeting Midway council voted to ask the regional district about the feasibility of expanding the food scraps recycling program to village residents. According to a video on the RDKB website the process takes everything from backyard waste to kitchen scraps to diapers and kitty litter and other organic material. The program is said to divert over 40 per cent of residential waste from the landfill.

A physiotherapist may soon be working a half-day per week in one of the basement offices at the medical clinic. Council agreed to propose a rental rate of $100 per month for six months; open to renegotiation should the hours increase.

Lorene Matteis, the woman who has served as administrator of Parkview Manor for over a decade, has moved on. She began working at the senior’s housing facility in Midway in April 2002 – just one year after the doors opened.
