A former Chief of the Splatsin First Nation and recipient of the British Columbia Reconciliation Award will run for the Liberal Party of Canada in the Similkameen-South Okanagan-West Kootenay Riding.
Gloria Morgan was acclaimed as the candidate and officially announced on March 31.
Little information was available in the Liberal's announcement of her candidacy, but she was announced as a recipient of the BC Reconciliation Award in November 2024.
At the time, Morgan was living in Enderby and told Black Press the award was humbling.
In addition to being a Residential School survivor, Morgan served as an RCMP officer for 11 years before practicing law for seven years until she was elected as Chief of the Splatsin First Nation.
She has also served as a Federal Adjudicator for the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada, on multiple boards including for Okanagan College and has taught Secwepemc Youth Language and Cultural Arts classes.
In 2024 joined as one of five initial members of the Elders and Knowledge Keepers Council for the B.C. First Nations Justice Council.
Morgan will be squaring off against at least four other candidates in the riding so far; Helena Konanz with Conservative Party of Canada, Carol Dyck with the Green Party of Canada, Linda Sankey with the NDP and Barry Dewar with the People's Party of Canada.
So far no independent candidates have officially registered, and they have until April 7 to do so.
