Kootenay Women in Trades will be hosting a networking and information event in Castlegar on Thursday, Dec. 5. The event is held in partnership with the BC Trades Equity Society, BC Centre for Women in the Trades and the Construction Foundation of BC.
Organizers say the event is open to women and "underrepresented tradies".
The event starts at 6 p.m. at the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce building at 1995 6th Ave. in the Mercer Celgar Boardroom.
The first hour (6-7 p.m.) is open to all those interested in pursuing a career in the trades. Participants are welcome to take some information home with them from an information booth.
The remainder of the evening (7-9 p.m.) will be reserved for those already in a trade. This session will feature a Zoom book reading from Hilary Peach, author of Thick Skin. There will also be a raffle prize draw which includes signed copies of Peach's book, refreshments plus an opportunity to create new friendships, open lines of communication, and access an assortment of resources.
This event is more than just a way to attract more women and underrepresented individuals of society into pursuing a career in the trades; it also impacts their potential for retention. The retention of women and all equity-seeking members of society in the trades is difficult due to many barriers, one major barrier being isolation, which may be addressed through the power of connection.
