The Castlegar Fire Department discovered one man had died and also rescued a second man and a cat in a hazmat call to a residence Monday morning.

According to Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio, CFD was called to a residence in the 3400 block of 4th Avenue at 10:02 a.m. on Feb. 24.

When they arrived, police officers were already on scene and advised that there was a gas smell present.

Firefighters entered the house and discovered the deceased man on the upper level and the other man in the basement and initiated rescue operations.

Lattanzio said high levels of carbon monoxide were present inside the residence.

Once CFD declared the site safe, command was transferred to the RCMP.

FortisBC, BC Ambulance and KERPA also responded to the incident.

RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are continuing to investigate the incident.
