Kootenay Central MLA Brittny Anderson is sworn in at the B.C. legislature on Nov. 18.

Kootenay Central MLA Brittny Anderson has been named Minister of State for Local Governments and Rural Communities by B.C. Premier David Eby.

Ministers of state are junior ministers whose role is to support a senior minister. Anderson will work directly under Eby.

Anderson has just entered her second full term as MLA after she was first elected in 2020 while still serving as a Nelson city councillor. She previously served as special advisor on youth and Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism.

The new cabinet includes 23 ministers and four ministers of state. It contains more women than men, as does Eby's caucus as a whole.

"While British Columbians may sometimes disagree," said Eby while announcing the new cabinet, "we all want the same basic things in life – a good paycheque, a home we can afford in a safe community and high-quality health care that's there when we need it. By working together on these common challenges, we can build a brighter future for everyone."

The naming of the new cabinet Nov. 18 follows the Oct. 19 election in which Eby's significant majority was reduced to 47 seats, the smallest possible majority in the legislature.
