A spring turkey shoot brought 18 trap shooters to the Kettle Wildlife trap range last Saturday. It took another four bodies in the kitchen to provide the lunch that the KWA is famous for.

Geoff Fern said the club had some prizes in the freezer and then they came across an opportunity to buy more at a good price. So a date was set and word went around to other local ranges.

Most shooters who traveled to the event came from the South Okanagan.

“It is a bit unusual to have a spring shoot – bit of a spur of the moment,” said Fern.

He explained that the club is going to offer a different form of competitive shooting this year. “American Trap is getting expensive,” he said, “with events that often run from Friday through Sunday; or a minimum of Saturday and Sunday. It cuts into the lifestyle of a demographic we would like to encourage to participate.”

“Most who come are not middle level and juniors – a heavy amount of retirees.”

What is on offer this season is a series of monthly 150 shoots - 50 single, 50 handicap and 50 doubles.

“It is hoped this will make it easier to get attendance. Clubs in Oliver and Vernon will be doing the same.”

This Saturday night will see the annual Wildlife Banquet at the hall.
