Retired engineer Mike Fairweather shared stories of his career as an engineer with students at Midway Elementary School.

Mike Fairweather, a retired engineer, came to the Midway Elementary School (MES) recently to enlighten the students on the many ways that engineers come into their lives.

“Engineering is about problem solving,” he explained as he gave an informative and fun overview of the many type of engineers there are in the world today.

His remarkable slide show kept the kids engaged.

Following a wider view of the engineering field given to all the school’s students, Fairweather gave a talk to the Grade 2 and 3 students about his specific area of engineering expertise, including pictures of places around the world that his career with Teck Cominco had taken him.

The young girls in the class were thrilled when he shared a picture of a young woman who works as a senior process engineer (at a very good salary) at a mine operating north of the Arctic Circle.

His presentation was done on behalf of the West Kootenay chapter of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGC). Each year the organization sponsors a bridge building contest targeted for grade 3 students using only popsicle sticks and white glue.
