Residents of Parkview Manor can sleep a bit easier knowing that, thanks to the Lions Club, evac chairs are available.

The Kettle River Lions Club has been a supporter of Parkview Manor since 1998 when members of the Rock Creek Medical Society and the Kettle River Lions Club gathered to discuss the building of a senior housing complex. Later that year, a non-profit society, the West Boundary Senior Housing Society, was formed and a fundraising drive began.

The Lions continue to support the facility. Their most recent contribution is the purchase of two evac chairs valued at over $3,500.

The chair allows a single adult to safely evacuate an adult down the stairs when the elevators are not available, such as in a fire.

The chairs will be available on the third floor of the building. Parkview Director Gerald Feist said they are hopeful that Area E Director Bill Baird will fund another pair of chairs for the second floor through the grant-in-aid-budget.

Parkview opened on April 1, 2001 and provides 20 individual units (15 independent and five assisted living).

A video of the chair in action can be seen online at www.evac-chair.com.
