The local Kootenay Cinch N Saddle 4-H Club hosted the Boundary 4-H District Public Speaking Competition on Saturday, April 6 in the United Church Basement in Castlegar.

The five seniors and seven juniors entertained the audience with topics of snow leopards, idioms, kindness, horses, and the Olympics. The speech on “What 4-H has done for me” was very fitting as 4-H Canada is celebrating its 100th year. From its humble beginnings in 1913 in Rolland, Manitoba with potatoes as the first project, it has grown and sustained for 100 years to help develop youth into responsible citizens we can all be proud of.

The winners in the juniors were: 1st, Sarah Mac Donald of the Boundary C 4-H Club speaking on women’s hockey; 2nd, Jade Fossen from Boundary C 4-H Club on her accident on her horse Danny and how it could have been prevented; 3rd, Margaret Smith from Nelson 4-H Club on how interesting dinosaurs are.

The seniors winner was Sarah Kobylka of Borderline 4-H Club, speaking on the murder of Abraham Lincoln; 2nd, Joselyn Reynolds of Kootenay Cinch N Saddle 4-H Club on her experience working on the family’s organic farm; 3rd, Sara Vanden Born of Boundary C 4-H Club speaking on technology and its effect on society.

The impromptu topic was “Do you think city kids would benefit from 4-H?”

A big thank you to the judges Linda Gomez, Brogan Pastro and Brent Wray for taking time to help the 4-H program.

A wonderful lunch was served and the awards given out. Sarah Kobylka and Jocelyn Reynolds will represent our district at the regionals in Kamloops the end of May.

The district council met after the speeches to plan the upcoming Judging Rally Day for May 4 in Rock Creek. The members are invited to compete for 100th year commemorative prizes in a poster contest to celebrate 4-H Canada’s centennial at Rock Creek Rally Day.

Thank you to everyone for helping 4-H get to its 100th year.
