Brielle Stent is a local product, having spent her entire school career in the Boundary. She knows exactly the career she’d like to follow: midwifery.

“In the next five years I want to be at university, either UBC in Vancouver or in Kelowna,” she states. “My final goal after university is to be working in a hospital or for a business as a midwife.”

Being a midwife is something she’s known she wanted to do for a long time. “I met this lady when I was in about Grade 9 who was expecting a baby. She already had six kids and I followed her kids around everywhere – I hung out with them and babysat them. I had so much fun playing with them.

“She told me she was going to have a baby and I was so excited and then I followed her around instead of her kids. She was expecting a baby and I guess I kind of had an interest in women who were expecting babies and just how it was interesting to me how a baby could grow inside of someone.”

Brielle’s mom told her that her friend was going to have a midwife for the delivery and, once Brielle looked up the definition of a midwife, she was hooked.

Since Grade 10 Brielle has been working for Sorted Solutions, a business started by her mom. Prior to that she used her certificates in Food Safe and babysitting courses to find other jobs, serving at weddings or babysitting.

She’s served her community in many capacities as a volunteer too with the Boundary Community Church Youth Group, BCSS Spirit Club, helping the Lions Club pack hampers and serving at the Easter dinners.

Brielle’s paperwork for her Grade 12 exit interview lists both paid and volunteer positions she has held. Reviewing the dates she’s listed you come to realize that she’s been busy; but what jumps out at you is the fact that her list of volunteer experiences is twice as long as her paid.

She’s been to Mexico twice with the youth group and she credits her participation with that program with a lot of her growth.

This summer Brielle intends to work as a senior cabin leader at Pines Bible Camp.

She’ll be saving her money to go to school because midwifery takes up to four years at UBC Vancouver.
