Cooking with locally grown grain and milled flour was the feature of an Empowerment of Seniors workshop sponsored by Kettle River Seniors #102.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, Heritage Mills came to the Midway Community Hall to present the workshop, which drew 26 people. Mel and Elena Steinke own heritage Mills, located just east of Rock Creek.

Also helping in the presentation were the Steinke’s daughter Carmela, her husband Jerry Theroux, and Dr. Christine Simpson. Heritage Mills has been in business since October 2011. They prefer to retail through local grocers but they will do direct sales in bulk. Their products are sold in a variety of sizes locally at McMynn’s in Midway and at Kettle River Woodcraft in Rock Creek.

The workshop was one of a series being funded through a New Horizons for Senior’s grant.

For more information or if you are interested in attending any workshops leave a message for Empowerment of Seniors grant administrator Vivien Browne at 250-528-7433.

Another foods session coming up is “Eating for Energy” on March 1 from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Midway Senior’s Centre. Melanie Zane and friends will present the session. All ages are welcome at the free event.
