➤ The District’s First Medicare Insurance Program – “After May 1, treatment at the Greenwood hospital will be at the disposal of every one at a very moderate price. Dr. Jakes has decided to issue monthly and annual tickets of admission to the hospital... monthly tickets can be procured for $2 or an annual ticket for $20. As the hospital has already established a name for excellent treatment, every wise man will provide for careful nursing and medical attendance when ill by securing monthly or yearly tickets.

“It is, of course, understood that no hospital tickets are sold to people already sick.”

➤ Game out of Season – “On April 14th, Charles Hozier, hotel keeper in Rock Creek, was charged by Provincial Constable Elkins with having a deer in his possession for the purpose of sale or traffic. Constable Elkins’ evidence was to the effect that he had dinner at the defendant’s hotel and was served with venison; that he subsequently found four quarters of venison hanging up in an outhouse and which he confiscated. The defendant admitted the charge but claimed that as he was a free miner, he had a right to kill deer at any time. The court inflicted a fine, including costs, of $25.50.”

➤ The Big City Map – “Mr. C. AE. Shaw, civil engineer, has just completed the map of the city of Greenwood and turned it over to city council. The map shows every portion of the city and is the first complete one prepared. It is over ten feet in length and includes not only the original townsite but all the subdivisions and portions of mineral claims within the corporation limits. The map may be seen at the Courthouse.”

➤ Assault and Battery – “Mrs. Haines of Greenwood was charged in the police court on Monday with having assaulted her Chinese cook. She acknowledged having hit the Chinaman with a poker, and Police Magistrate Hallett imposed a fine of $75.”

➤ No Ferry But a Basket Instead – “Now that the government has decided not to build the ferry across the West Fork of the Kettle River above Rock Creek, Mr. David Beath of Greenwood has decided to build a basket for the conveyance of prospectors and supplies across the river. As there are a large number of prospectors going into the district this year, the venture is likely to prove profitable.”

➤ Large Mining Plant for the Mother Lode – “An order has been placed for a 10-drill Ingersoll-Sergeant air compressor, two 60-horse-power boilers, large hoisting engine, sinking pump and complete mining outfit for the Mother Lode mine in Deadwood Camp. This is the largest plant yet installed in the Boundary district. It will be shipped two weeks from receipt of order, and be on the ground in 4 or 5 weeks.”
